100 BL Questions for BL fans!

Although I hoped to make a dedicated section in my site towards my fujo tendencies and ships, I though it would be fun to fill out a questionnaire form I've seen floating around LJ in the meanwhile so I have some ideas written down for when I get around to making that page!

In my early twenties as of writing this post.

004. How did you first learn about BL? How long have you been a fan of BL?
Can't remember the exact moment I learned about BL, though I do recall my earliest memory of discovering "homosexual relationships" would be the time I went down a rabbit hole of gay erotica and porno when I was googling wildly inappropriate search terms as a kid. I think my first instance of seeing yaoi content would be either the time I accidentally came across myreadingmanga trying to find free manga scans of an anime, or the time I stumbled across dmmd gameplay on youtube.

005. What did you think the first time you learned about BL?
At first I found it weird and wondered why there wasn't a female character in the picture (since most hentai I saw were predominantly male and female).
Sometimes I would even envision scenarios where a female character walks in on them and somehow magically convinces them to bang her instead. I think I got around to BL scenarios without a female character hijacking the spotlight when I accidentally interpreted doujinshi on myreadingmanga as the canon source material....

006. On average, how many books (novels and comics) to you buy a month?
Not a lot, I read most of my content online and I tend to only buy manga volumes that contain a sentimental moment or panel that evokes strong emotions. There's something special about flipping through the pages physically and seeing a particular moment in the book that unleashes the water works.
Although it's not BL, this specific page from My Broken Mariko, along with the scene leading up towards it, never fails to make me emotional. It's one of the few books I likely see myself keeping for the foreseeable future, regardless of my shifting tastes and preferences.

007. How many of them are BL?
I don't have a lot of original BL, though I have a collection of doujinshis that are my prized treasures. I hope to expand my collection eventually when I have the budget for it.

008. How many BL books do you own?
Out of the 10 doujins I own, 6 are BL.

009. Do you read BL magazines? Or do you wait for series to be published independently?
Neither? I just read whatever looks nice and search for content via the tags.

010. Are there any BL magazines you buy almost every month?
Nope.

011. Do you use used bookstores? How do you decide which books to buy there?
Does mandarake and Japanese second-hand shops count? I don't use bookstores in general for regular normie books since I either go to the library or find a free PDF of it online to read. As for which books I'd buy on mandarake, I check if it's a realistic price point for me to purchase (I've seen some highly sought after doujins go upwards of $600!!!!) and most importantly if its a ship that I like.

012. What sort of situations do you enjoy? (Schools, hospitals, entertainment industry, foreign countries, historical, etc.)
I'm not too picky, I have a preference towards character dynamics and personality rather than the setting. If I like the characters/ship enough I even envision them in multiple AUs where they're in different settings!

013. What sort of pairings do you enjoy? (Difference in age, younger seme, shota, middle aged uke, etc.)
Oh man, I have a ton. I'll just make a list of various tropes I enjoy in no particular order

For BL I read anything as long as the ship dynamics interest me, for fanfics I go straight to the rape/noncon tag on ao3.
If it's an OTP I am particularly drawn to it's slice of light and multi-chapter/longfics.

015. One-shots or series, which do you like best?
I like both!

016. Personally, are you okay with reversible pairings?
Absolutely fucking not, and I don't have a deeper reason besides feeling squicked by riba.
inb4 realism: If you want realistic homosexual relationship stories read an autobiography.

I'm really into it.

018. The seme or the uke, who do you mostly identify with?
The seme. I like to joke that I spiritually have the soul of a mob ojisan that harasses the uke.

Aoki Sensei from Oni to Tengoku is so kyuteee....

The classmate from 'Chikan sareteru Kare wo Guuzen wo Hakken shite, teki na Tenkai de' (warning for sexual assault and gang rape)
wont elaborate since its spoilers, though I highly recommend checking it out if the aforementioned warnings aren't a squick.

022. Which character would you like to make your man?
No one, what a strange question to ask in a BL questionnaire.
Though if we're talking about characters from a snail fujo perspective, I definitely yoom to Meteor-kun from final fantasy xiv

023. Is there a character you'd like to be more like?
Mister mob ojisan.

Can't recall, if I really dislike a character I pretend the character plus the series they came from don't exist.

Zero for original BL works. Don't ask me about how much slash fanfic I consume though. I lost track.

None, I don't read BL novels.

Nope.
I haven't read a lot of the iconic BL series (i.e. junjou romantica, loveless, Ai no Kusabi, gravitation) and I've never gotten out of my way to read them because of their status. If they happen to have a trope I like maybe I'd pick it up, but otherwise I stick to reading BL that suit my taste rather than read stories that have notoriety.

034. Do you enjoy the Fujimi nichome kokyogakudan series?
Never read that as well, but the character who I presume to be the uke looks cute and reminds me of Harry from HP.

035. Do you enjoy the Takumi-kun series?
Haven't read that either.

036. Have you ever read the Ao no kido series?
I tried searching it up but various results appeared, some appearing to be doujin for an unrelated series. The name doesn't ring a bell either so also no.

037. Which is your favorite of Kihara Otose's works?
Haven't read any.

038. Do you enjoy the works of Eda Yuri?
..Also haven't read any.

039. Do you enjoy the works of Tsukimura Kei?
.......Still don't know, jeez these questions are antiquated.

040. What genres of novels do you enjoy besides BL?
I enjoy original GL stories a lot, as well as Josei manga, slice of life, fantasy, and historically inspired media.

041. Are there any novelists you'd like to see write BL novels?
None in particular that I can think of at the moment

042. Of illustrators to BL novels, who do you like?
I don't read BL novels so I'm not sure.

043. Are there any illustrators you'd like to illustrate BL novels?
None that I can think of from the top of my head.

044. On average, how many BL manga do you read in a month?
A lot. I've lost count. Wait I just realized that 'novel' and 'manga' isn't being used interchangeably.
Oh gosh I've never read a single original BL in novel format at all before (quickly fixing my previous quests waaah)

045. Of BL mangaka, who do you like?
Do doujin circles count? I really like 3745HOUSE's works, she's the Harada equivalent for bottom Gintoki doujins.
I also like killer bambi, unknown, UNKY, and recently been enjoying Kemeo's pokemon doujins.
As for original BL works, Yamashita Tomoko's BL dynamics have been solid and very enjoyable.

046. Of BL manga-ka, who draws to suit your tastes?
3745HOUSE's art is inspiring, Harada also draws really nice pained faces.
Oh an POTION draws really sexy ukes!

047. Are there BL manga-ka whose drawing-style you dislike?
Most geikomi artists and Honey QP (shudder)

048. Of BL manga-ka, whose stories do you enjoy?
Yamashita Tomoko for sure. Although she mostly makes one-shots, her seme/uke dynamic tastes have been superb!

049. What is your favorite BL manga?
Hard to pick only one; I like Oni to Tengoku , Touch me again, Himono Tokodoki Shanairen'ai, the first chapter of Eki kin Mahou Tsukai Tsuki Ikkodate, Bokura no Shokutaku, Plaything.... I think that's about it for original BL that I can think of from the top of my head. If I were to add doujins to the equation the list would never end....

050. What is your favorite line in BL manga publishing?
Tied between this one from Plaything and this one from Touch me Again: Nuotatore nel cantero!

051. Have you ever read Seiyo kotto yogashiten?
Nope.

If we're talking about general genres, I really like dudebro media (i.e. shounen manga), video games (i.e. yakuza series, fromsoftware, FF series), and well. pretty much anything! There is yaoi everywhere for those with eyes to see ♪

058. Are there any works you think are BL-ish to begin with?
FF16 even though I never actually played it (but iykyk), FFXIV if you play as a male wol, Kaiji probably.... ermm theres probably more but let's just interpret every single media I've indulged in as BL adjacent probably hehe

059. Are there any titles you have never read but enjoy parodies of?
Oh a ton. I've been enjoying BL art from Devil May Cry, Sonic, FF16, Elden Ring, Metal gear solid.. ahh I really want to get into these series eventually but FFXIV has me in a vice grip!!

060. Do you enjoy yaoi with Captain Tsubasa?
I don't know Captain Tsubasa

I don't know Initial D but the protag is a cutie

Never seen it so I'm not sure.

Hell yeah, I wish myreadingmanga wasn't so picky about doujin uploads.

No but I admire the dedication and effort it takes to create one. I wouldn't be adverse to making one for fun some day but I struggle with following through with projects.

068. Do you go to events (comiket etc.)? If so, to do what?
No but I would certainly love to. It would be a dream to purchase doujin without having to worry about customs and shipping.

069. Have you ever listened to a BL drama CD? What was the first one you ever heard?
I don't go out of my way to listen to BLCDs but I did briefly listen to some snippets from Kiryu's VA, and the Yarichin Bitch Club CD. Not a fan personally.

070. What did you think when you listened to a BLCD for the first time?
I kept imagining the VAs in the voice booth trying to mimick the yaoi sounds and my immersion was immediately ruined. There was a scene in Yakuza that made a homage to Kiryu's voice actor being a smut VA and I tried listening to his works only to be immediately squicked out by the kissing sounds ughhhh

Kenjiro Tsuda is the only one I can think of from the top of my head. He has a pretty suave voice.

I don't listen to BLCDs but past me probably would've liked it.

An embarrassingly large amount that I do not keep track of. Does FFXIV count as BL if I yaoi my wol..?

I don't play BL games.

Dmmd would be the only BL game I've ever actually seen (aka watched a playthrough of)
Any game can be a BL game if you put your mind to it ^_^

No, though I have an admiration towards people who are capable of reading media critically and are able to articulate their thoughts regarding the structure and flow of a piece of media.

None in particular.

094. How do you feel if a title you like has gotten bad reviews?
I'd either think "Damn I have shit taste" or "Y'all just don't see the vision like I do.... you guys have shit taste!"

095. Personally, are you okay with spoilers?
Not really, they ruin the momentum if I'm trying to go through a series blind. The only exceptions I'll make is regarding the couple's positions. I'm really picky on who tops/bottoms.

096. Do you check out homepages of writers and voice actors? If so, why?
Not really.

097. What sites of writers and voice actors do you like?
I don't keep track of VAs honestly, it ruins the immersion when I visualize the face behind an anime boy.

098. What do you think of the current BL "boom"?
The recent surge of masculine uke works fills my heart with joy. Korean and Chinese fujos feed me so well ^_^

099. What is the attraction of BL?
I like seeing males getting beat and abused.

100. Please give your opinion on "100 questions for the BL fan".
A lot of the questions definitely show their age, and you can tell when a questionnaire starts to run out of questions when they start asking "Do you like the works from xyz?" or "What do you think of xyz's works?"
It was still pretty fun to fill out and I'd recommend it for fujos who are more versed in original BL works!
